Carol just celebrated her twentieth birthday. On the day of her birthday, she went out to lunch with her best friend Tina. Carol had planned to spend a quiet evening at home by herself. She didn't want to have a party, but Tina talked her into having her friends and parents over. After lunch, Carol went back to work. Her boss wished her a happy birthday and gave her a beautiful bouquet of flowers. When she got off work, she called up a few of her friends and invited them over to celebrate. Her father and mother stopped by before all of the other guests were supposed to come. Her mother baked a cake and her father cooked dinner. Carol just sat on her comfortable sofa and watched them. In the end, it was the best birthday she had ever had.

1. 介绍动词talk, say 及 speak 的用法
a. tell作及物动词，表“告诉 ”、“叫”、“讲”，用于下列结构：
tell sb + that 从句 告诉某人……
tell sb sth 告诉某人某事
tell sb to V 叫某人从事……
tell sb (sth) about...告诉某人有关……的事情
tell a lie / a story / a joke（lies / stories / jokes）讲谎话/故事/笑话
tell (sb) the truth(向某人)说实话
To tell (you) the truth,...老实(对你)说，……
例：
John told me that he was so ill that he wasn't able to attend the meeting.
约翰告诉我他很不舒服因此无法参加会议。
I told him to go back home and take a good rest.
我叫他回家好好休息。
Peter never tells anyone (anything) abou this family.
彼得从不向人提及他的家庭。
My cousin David is good at telling stories /jokes.

I don't trust Bill because he often tells lies.

b. talk 多作不及物动词，表“讲话”。
例：
Stop talking, everyone. The teacher is coming.

John talks a lot. He is indeed a windbag.

talk 亦可与介词 about 并用，表"谈论"。

注意： talk 亦可作及物动词，表"说服"，采下列结构：
talk sb into V-ing 说服某人从事……
= persuade sb to V
talk sb out of V-ing 说服某人不要……
= dissuade sb from V-ing
I felt very happy when I successfully talked Dad into quitting smoking.
= I felt very happy when I successfully persuaded Dad to quit smoking.
我成功说服老爸戒烟时，感到很高兴。
I don't think I can talk my daughter out of going out with her new
boyfriend.
= I don't think I can dissuade my daughter from going out with her new boyfriend.
我想我无法说服我女儿不要与她新男友来往。
c. speak 作及物动词，表"说"（某种语言）
例：John speaks German very well.
约翰德语说得很好。
How many languages do you speak?
你会操几种语言。
注意：
1) speak 亦可作不及物动词，表"谈话"，此时与 talk 用法相同：
What are you guys speaking about?
= What are you guys talking about?
你们大家正在谈些什么？
2) speak 亦可作电话用语，有下列用法：
A：Hello. Who's speaking, please?
B：Hi: this is John Smith (speaking). Is Mary there?
A：Hold on, please.
甲：哈啰。请问您是哪一位？
乙：嗨：我是约翰‧史密斯。玛丽在吗？
甲：请稍候。
3) 要某人提高音量时，亦可使用 speak。
例：I can't hear you. Can you speak louder?
我听不见你的声音。你可否说大声点？
4) speaking 亦可与副词并用，形成下列固定短语，置句首：
Generally speaking, women are more conservative than men.
一般而言，女人比男人保守。
Frankly speaking, you are not my cup of tea.
坦白说，你不是我喜欢的那一类型。
d. say 作及物动词，表"说"，一般用 something、nothing、a few words that 从句、直接引句（"..."）作宾语。
例：John said something(which) I didn't understand.
= John said a few words (which) I didn't understand.
约翰说了一些我听不懂的话。
When I asked Peter what he would do this weekend, he said, "I just want to stay home listening to music."
= When I asked Peter what he would do this weekend, he said that he just wanted to stay home listening to music."
我问彼得这个周末他想做什么事时，他说："我只想待在家里听音乐。"
= 我问彼得这个周末他想做什么事时，他说他只想待在家里听音乐。
2. 本课第四句即使用 "talk sb into V-ing"（说服某人从事……）的结构：
...but Tina talked her into having her friends and parents over.
……但是蒂娜说服她邀她的朋友和父母亲过来。
